Sorry for such a long delay, everyone. Its been quite the madhouse lately. Way back in February, we did a bunch of fun S-F-A-H with some cool new artists. Hannah, Scott, Luke and Erika joined us in our fun times at the Lotus. Here is a collection of sketches from that night.

Food Foght III Round 2 results

DOWN GOES TAQUITOS! DOWN GOES TAQUITOS!
It was another wild ride in round two of the Food Fight III tournament. The heavily favored Taquitos went down quickly, losing by the largest margin in the history of the tournament! Onion Ringja made quick work of the deep fried snack despite being out numbered. By the time the dust settled, Taquitos were down at -105 HP while Onion Ringja stood victorious with +230 HP! How the mighty have fallen.

Health Food Kick!
After a strong showing in the first round, Chili Cheese Fry Monster couldn't stand a chance against the mighty Greek Salad. The battle was very even through most of the night. It was the advantage that Greek Salad earn through the brackets that gave it the ultimate assist. In the classic struggle between healthy and greasy, Greek Salad wins this battle... but what about the war? Next round, a very greasy and heavily favored Onion Ringja!

Swiss' Attack Plans Are Full of Holes!
Nuts & Bolts? In what was more like a battle royal, Deez Nuts pounded the all beef patty into submission. The nuts came out swinging, and quickly disposed of the Swiss General and his boys from Buffalo.

Number 1 gets Pickled!
Mr Dastardly Pickle becomes the first number one seed to not make it past the first battle as Chili Fry Smasher lumbers his way to victory. Despite having the heavy advantage of a full 180 HP more, there was nothing the coy cucumber could do to cut the crazed onslaught of the chili warrior. A number nine seed topple the number one seed. It is anyone's tournament!

Suds gets Licked!
In the first major blow out of FFIII, the Monster dished out a severe offensive attack that neither the Suds nor his Salt Licks could recover from. Although putting up a brilliant effort in the end, it was not enough for the beverage to withstand the fury of the Chili Cheese Fry Monster!

Burgette Smashed!
It was an amazing battle that went right down to the wire. When the dust settled, it was Chili Fry Smasher who prevailed over Cheesa Burgette. Advantage shifted back and forth between these two evenly matched competitors as they clashed. Action was so heated, that it was anyone's match within the closing rounds of this battle. The winner, Chili Fry Smasher lumbers its way into the next round op the tournament.

On Thursday December 18th, Black Lotus held its annual pickle party, and we were there to enjoy the free pickles, and of course... to DRAW! Here are a few sketches we drew of a few characters from that night. We passed around a piece of sketch paper and tried to fill each sheet with pickle goodness! So here are the two sketches. The first is a guy we call Emo Frank the Pickle Lover and the second is DJ Invisible who is available for hire. Enoy our scribbles!

Draw! Sucka Draw!
is a group of students and professionals that get together once a week to draw at the Black Lotus Brewery in Clawson, Michigan.

For this project, each of 5 people started a drawing and passed it to the right where the next person added to that drawing. When each person contributed to all 5 drawings, they were complete.

Finally, all 5 of the finished drawings were given a splash of color and overlapped, creating a truly unique collaboration that serves as a memory of that night and hopefully expresses the creativity in drawing for the sake of drawing.

Pasta vs Pasta... a Carbolicious Battle!

It was an historic rise to the top. In an unprecedented demolition of competition, Alfredo rose above his #11 seed to become the 2008 FOOD FIGHT CHAMPION. Going an impressive 4-0 in this year's competition, Alfredo rolled over every advantage his competitors had on him. There was no doubt who the true champion was. The best dish one, hams down!

Spaghetti gives Sisters UPSET Stomach!

In yet another upset in this competition, #4 seeded Scargetti ran over the #1 Cannoli Sisters! It was a vicious battle, and the advantage switched back and forth. In the end, though, the entree came before the dessert! The Sisters bow out of the competition making it to the semi-finals and the satisfaction of winning the Judge's Favorite Award and the award for Most Appetizing Dish. However, awards don't get you closer to the final prize, the coveted HELMS CUP! Scargetti advances to the final round, one step closer to glory!

Wabbit Stewed!

The Most Gratuitous Dish faced off against the Cinderella Story in a classic battle for supreme cuisine! The Rabbit was pounding on the Seafood Pasta, when a phone call from the trainer turned things around completely. RWRW had Alfredo on the ropes when her trainer, Anna Lisa, called and started calling the moves. In the confusion, Al regathered his bearing, reorganized his strategy and attacked with renewed energy. The onslaught was too much for the Rabbit, who quickly toppled much tot he dismay of her trainer. When the smoke had cleared, the rabbit was down, and Alfredo had bought his first class ticket to the final round!

Cannoli Obliterates Noodles!

In the most devastating match in Food Fight history, Kassandra's Cannoli Sisters laid the smack down on Miker's Luigi. The deadly sisters took out 150 HP from Luigi, where the only offense the wet noodles could muster up was about 10 HP.

"It was one of the most one sided match I have ever seen in my life... it was like the Globetrotters taking on the Generals if the Generals were playing in fat sumo suits and the Globetrotters had taken a super secret high jumping serum developed by the U.S. government," one shocked spectator gratuitously commented.

Rabbit Stews Fish!

In a huge upset, #7 R.W.R.G. handed down a hearty spoonful of defeat to the heavily flavored #2 Seven. The Feast Of The Seven Fishes could not hold his own against the rabid rabbit. Now this Wascally Wabbit faces her toughest challenge going into the Final Four!

Al Upsets in Seafood Battle!

In another major upset, #11 Alfredo pounds #3 King Porofino into leftovers! The King was powerless against the Cinderella Story of the year! Alfredo has steamed his way through the competition and earns a right to sit amongst the Final Four.

When asked the comment, the rotund dish simply said "Its Wabbit Season!"

Scargetti Tears Terror!

The opening bout featured two evenly match Fighters. #4 Scargetti defeated #5 Terror-Mistu, proving that there is no room for dessert! The last minute rally from the terrible one just was not enough to stop Scargetti, who also earns a place in the Final Four. We shall see if Scargetti's luck against desserts continue against the number one seed!

This is a little game where we all start a drawing, where a character is looking at an empty scene and saying "What's My Line?" We then pass the drawing to our left, and the next artist starts to fill up the scene with crazy characters and funny situations. Zombie Beauty Pageant starts Thursday!

Zombie Beauty Pageant is a drawing competition between the Draw Sucka! artists. Each artist draws a zombie based on a randomly named subject (for example Food, Reptiles, Lawyers). Those illustrations are then judged by a panel of Celebrity Judges. The Zombie who scores highest with the judges wins.

To compete in ZBP, your zombie:
1. Must be a zombie, and must stay within the year's subject.
2. Must be sized at 5"x7" at 200 dpi.
3. Must be submitted by email or by disk by the deadline.

THIS YEAR'S SUBJECT IS: The staff of the Black Lotus Brewing Company

THIS YEAR'S DEADLINE IS: Thursday, October 25, 2007.

You will be judged by both concept and artistic quality. Judges will give each Zombie a number score. The highest average score wins the competition.

The FINAL BATTLE quickly approaches

In an eventful evening, Both Bacon Arms MacMuffin and Berries n' Blitzkreig advance from the final four. The two semi-final battles were exciting! All four competitors gave it everything they had, but in the end, only two dishes held their ground. In the finals, it will be #1 Berries n' Blitzkreig verses #6 Bacon Arms MacMuffin. Bacon Arms will start with 250 points, and Berries will have 315.

May the best entree win!

It was a battle at the Black Lotus Brewing Company on Thursday night. A battle of epic proportions.

The four Food Fight Warriors moving on to the semi-finals are Berries n" Blitzkrieg, Corned Beef and Hash Dragon, Bacon Arms MacMuffin, and Goo Goo. Two underdogs, Bacon Arms MacMuffin and Goo Goo, came out against amazing odds. They both defeated their opponents who had big point advantage.

Next Thursday, these four warriors will compete in the semi finals. Goo Goo will start with 235 points. Bacon Arms will start with 230 points. Corned Beef Hash Dragon will start iwth 265 points. Berries n' Blitzkrieg will start with 280 points.

The biggest defeat of the night came in the opening battle, when Corned Beef Hash Dragon took down El Poncho Del Terrible Omeletto. Dragon came out 130 points ahead of Omeletto when the dust had cleared.

The highlight of the night had to be Bacon Arms MacMuffin battled Hash Brown Jack. There were 6 lead changes in the battle, and it came down to the last 30 points. Bacon Arms pulled out the big win.

The biggest upset of the night happened when #2 Piglin the Odiferous took on #8 Goo Goo. Goo Goo came up from a 120 point disadvantage to beat his opponent.

Next week, the semi-final begin. See who makes the cut, and who gets served up!

Life is very unfair sometimes. The artistic world was robbed this past Monday of a brilliant artist and and even better person. Mike leaves behind a legacy of inspiration, having been such an influence to many young up-and-comers. He had a strong influence on my pencil, and to that I will always be greatful. Thank you, Mike. So Mike and I have decided on the BLACK LOTUS BREWING COMPANY to be the location for drawing night from now on. They serve homemade beers along will a wide variety of specialty coffees and teas. It has some pretty good atmosphere, and a nice lounge area in the back. People under 21 are welcomed, but obviously can not concume alcoholic beverages. Mike and I will be closely monitoring this too, so don't even try it!

The Black Lotus is easy to find. If you are coming up from school, take I-75 north to 14 mile, and go west on 14 mile until you get to the north-east corner of Main and 14. Email me if you need more directions!

Well, this is our last week at the Starbucks located on Woodward just north of 13 Mile. A tear comes to my eye when I recall the countless fun we had here, but August is looming over us, and Woodward is not the street you want to hang around in the middle of August! So we move on to a new location starting August 2nd! The exact wheres and hows will be brought up after Mike and I finish scouting some new prospects. Keep posted to this blog for further info!

Regardless, join us for a fond farwell to this fine establishment! It has treated us like true gentlemen (and occasional gentle women) and we greatly appreciate the love! Farwell random Bob Marley songs! Farwell strange hair dresser support groups! Farwell Orange Creme whipped milky drinks! We move onward!

Hey everyone!

Anyone who had a review this week, I hope it went well!

Its hard to believe that the big shin-dig was already 7 days ago. Thank you all for coming to the party, and thank you all for coming to the sessions over the last 32+ weeks. A community is only as strong as the people who make it up. And thanks to the dedication of the artists in our community, we have been very strong. We all have inspired each other to become better artists. It is really cool to be part of a community like this, and although I don't want to wish away my summer, I look forward to the fall when we can all meet up at that same Starbucks again.

Mike and I are discussing a new location for the summer drawing sessions, but for the time being I will say that the current Starbucks on Woodward is still the place to go. As I mentions in the subject line, we will not be meeting today, but will resume sketching next Thursday. Anyone who is in town is welcomed to come by. I will post up times and directions later in the week.

Sketch Crawl Saturday!

I know I have not touched the subject in quite a while, but we should all remember that SKETCHCRAWL is happening this coming Saturday. I pondered the location for quite some time, and the best place I could think of is a place most of us are well familiar with.
We will be meeting in the cafeteria of COLLEGE FOR CREATIVE STUDIES at 12:00 NOON and will be drawing until 2:00 in the afternoon. If it is nice outside, maybe we will wander outside the quad.
We will draw a little bit of everything. People passing through. Small animals scavenging. Buildings. Stuff. Medium is unlimited.
After we finish sketching, it will be up to you to scan in your drawings and post them up to the forum. You will need to register to the site. You may also need to uload files to a server (I recommend photobucket or villagephoto if you don't have your own web site).

For the second week in a row, we will be drawing at Mike's house. Most of the info is the same:
Locaton: Mike's House
Time: 8:00 - 10:00 or maybe 10:30

Model fee: $5 per person.
Bring a snack or beverage! Some suggestions: fruit, pudding cups, Sodie Water, chips, hummus, chitlins and/or grits!

Hey everyone! A little change in plans for this week. We will be meeting at Mike's house to do a little figure drawing. A model has been hired and the living room is being reorganized to convert Mike's simple and humble abode into a full figure drawing studio. We will probably be taking a very long pose for most of the night, so come prepare with the proper mediums and supports!

Hey sketchers

Just wanted to give you all a heads up that this upcoming Thursday will be the final Thursday for our sketch session for 2006. I hope you will all be able to make it, considering most of you will just be finishing up final assignments and getting ready to pack it up and head home. I'll be a festive, joyous session, as we celebrate the end of nice phat year, and look forward to another, rewarding 2007! I'll bring some drawing games, and issue on 1 hour challenge. We'll drink cider and hot chocolate and have a good ol' bash!

Zombie Battle

As you recall, this was a challenge issued from a few weeks ago, just before Halloween. The challenge was to create a zombie. The twist was that each zombie had to be vegatable based. At the end of the two weeks, each zombie was to be pitted aganst eachother... in mortal combat. To the loser... a tragic death the the Thanksgiving dinner table. The winner... also Thanksgiving dinner... oh well.

The Zombie Battle is on, four Zombies enter... only one emerges victorious. Here are the four combatants. Starting from the top left corner and moving clockwise, we have a TOMATO ZOMBIE, CORN ZOMBIE, POTATO ZOMBIE, and LETTUCE ZOMBIE. Good luck to all of you.

Hey Sketchers... as we wind down the season, I want to give a heads up on what the next couple of weeks will bring.

• This week, we will meet on November the 16th at the Starbucks on Woodward and 13 Mile, at 7:45 PM.
• If you want to show up at Starbucks the next week on the 23rd, please feel free. I, however, will be at home eating Thanksgiving dinner and probably cursing the Lions.
• The last day of November, the 30th, we will meet once again at the Starbucks on Woodward and 13 Mile. I know this is going to be a crunch if you are currently in school, so feel free to bring out any projects or sketchbooks to work on while we are there.

We'll discuss the month of December, because the semester will end on the 15th. See you soon!

Those of you who were present at the Sketch Session tonight know of the latest challenge. The deadline for that challenge is a week from tonight: Thursday, November 2. The size is 6" wide by 9 " tall (or in proportion to). When you scan them in, please scan them in as RBG and at 200 dpi. Email these to me.

Once again, tight sketches are cool, but feel free to add ink washes, marker, ketchup, etc. Explore different styles, and different techniques. Lookin' forward to some cool art.

Hey all, it was good to see you again. I have to admit, it feels good to be back behind a sketchbook again, to much work and not enough free time has made Joe a dull boy. There were some solid sketches being kicked around this past Thursday!

Here is the rundown of what is to come for the rest of September:
9/17/06 - Opening Day Saturday Drawing Clinic at CCS... I won't be there, damn this Unforgiven PPV!
9/20/06 - Wednesday sketch session at Caribou Coffee... barring any crazy emergencies, I'll be there. Plus, this is the return of the world famous "Sketches from a Hat" game.
9/23/06 - Saturday Drawing Clinic at CCS... I would love to make it, but the day may be busy... I'll keep you all posted.
9/28/06 - Thursday Sketch Session at Caribou Coffee... once again, I plan to be there.
9/30/06 - Saturday Drawing Clinic at CCS... I'll try to make this one too.

Hey everyone! It was a great time yesterday night and I think we all got some good drawing in.

Lets make the plan for next week! I think I liked the Wednesday session (comfy chairs are nice!), but just for one week, lets go back to our Thursday drawing time. New Challenge & Next Sketch Session

Wassabi! So far, we are thinking about Wednesday (8/9) or Thursday (8/10) to meet for another sketch session deep in the heart of Royal Oak. I would say we would be starting around 8 PM in Carribou Coffee. As always, bring sketchbooks, pens, pencils, paints, markers, whatever you can transport easily. I'll be looking for sketches to scan in and post on this blog, so be sure to email me some scans! (Email me the times that are best for you, I'll announce the date and time in a few days.)

As far as a first challenge, I came across this great site. http://www.mojizu.com There is a link to it on the side of this page. There are some fun characters in here, and I would like to make this our first official challenge.
